Over the years, there has been some deviation from the original drawing and the standard of presentation has deteriorated to the detriment of this part of our corporate image. In connection with the recent trade marking registration of the Universitys visual images, the opportunity was taken to obtain a further copy of the working drawings of the Shield of Arms from the College of Arms.   Full Colour Pantone colour for reference (as advised by the Registrar on October 25, 2004)   Red - Worm Red U 2X Green - 346 U Blue - 2925 U Yellow - Yellow U Brown - Black 5U Black - Process Black U   Brown 1 - 131 U   Brown 2 - 4635 U Book edging and lion shadow Brown 3 - 4975 U             [Back to top] Monotone Shield Unshaded A monotone unshaded version of the Shield is widely used on University stationery. This version is illustrated here:     Monotone Shield Shaded (Petra Sancta) For nearly 50 years, the University has also used a monotone version of the Shield which indicates the colours used in the full colour version by shading. Although this version has not been formally registered by the College of Arms, it employs the Petra Sancta hatching system used for nearly four centuries by the College to represent heraldic colours in monotone. Sylvester Petra Sancta, a Jesuit priest with a great interest in heraldry, invented this system in 1638, and it gradually superseded other hatching systems. As the Petra Sancta system only provided hatchings for the primary heraldic colours, additional hatchings were developed later to represent less commonly-used colours.
