Doctors in Hong Kong and Canada used the antiviral drug Ribavirin + steroid with varying degrees of success. Tests in the USA showed no effect of Ribavirin on coronavirus in the laboratory but clinical experience in Hong Kong suggested that it was effective in some patients.

Doctors in China claimed that integrative traditional Chinese and Western medicine were effective also.

The mainstay of treatment is early detection, early isolation of patient, supportive therapy and timely administration of Ribavirin and steroid.

Poor outcome factors are: advanced age, high admission neutrophil count, and high initial lactate dehydrogenase level.
