Fatal accident shocks HKU community

Students and staff at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) were deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Year-1 student, Ms Kitty Chong Chung Yin, after being hit by a tree which collapsed in Stanley yesterday afternoon.

HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui said, "It is always sad to learn of the loss of a life, and especially such a young one. For the University, it is particularly heartrending because Kitty had just joined HKU as a freshman student."

The University will provide the necessary support to the family.

Kitty was literally from a "HKU family", with her father and elder sister both HKU graduates who studied at the Faculty of Medicine.

Many Faculty members, such as Professor Raymond Liang, remember the surviving father and sister as their classmates or students, and are friends of the family.

Professor Liang said, "I have known Dr Chong, Kitty's father, for many years. This is truly tragic news and my heart goes out to the family."

The University will duly convey the wishes and condolences from members of the HKU community to the family.
